What Design Decisions Determine Whether a 1.5-Inch OLED Display Survives Industrial HMI?
Neueste Unternehmensnachrichten über What Design Decisions Determine Whether a 1.5-Inch OLED Display Survives Industrial HMI?

A 1.5-inch OLED display sits in an awkward but useful spot. It is large enough to show a real UI—128 × 128 pixels, a 26.86 mm active square—but small enough to fit a handheld instrument, a panel-mount controller, or a compact medical device. The SH1107 controller inside the SFOS150JY-7205PAN from Saef Technology Limited supports 8080/6800 parallel, 4-wire SPI, and I2C, which gives the integrator room to choose the interface that fits the host. That flexibility is helpful, but it also means the display can be configured in ways that look fine on a bench and fail in a 70°C cabinet or a cold warehouse.

This article is organized around five design decisions that determine whether a 1.5-inch OLED display survives industrial HMI. Each decision is tied to a specific section of the datasheet, and each one is a place where a prototype can pass while a production unit fails. The full pin definitions, power sequence, command table, and application circuits are in the SFOS150JY-7205PAN_Datasheet 1.5-inch OLED display 128x128 dots.pdf. Place this link in the power-architecture section of the product page, with the anchor text above.

Decision 1: Internal DC-DC or external VPP—choose before the schematic review

The SFOS150JY-7205PAN supports two power schemes. With the internal DC-DC pump enabled, the display generates the panel voltage from VDD, and VPP is not supplied externally. With external VPP, the host must provide 12.5–13.5 V (typical 13.0 V) on the VPP pin, and the internal pump is disabled. The datasheet’s application circuits show different component sets and different power-up sequences for each mode.

A common mistake with a 1.5-inch OLED display is to design for one mode and then switch during prototyping without updating the BOM or the firmware. The internal DC-DC mode requires the command sequence that enables the pump, and the external VPP mode requires a clean 13 V rail. The power consumption is specified at 120–150 mW with 30% pixels on, but that number depends on the contrast setting and the power architecture. If the external 13 V rail stays alive in sleep mode, the system current can be much higher than the display’s own sleep current.

For a 1.5-inch OLED display in a battery-powered instrument, the internal DC-DC mode is often the better starting point because it avoids an extra boost converter. For a mains-powered industrial panel, the external VPP mode can be simpler if a 13 V rail already exists. The decision should be made at the schematic review, not after the first prototype. The datasheet’s power-up sequence shows the reset pulse width, the delay before the display-on command, and the 100 ms wait after the display-on command. Those timings apply to both modes, but the rail order is different.

Decision 2: The interface choice affects refresh rate and pin count

The SH1107 supports 8080/6800 parallel, 4-wire SPI, and I2C. On a 1.5-inch OLED display with 128 × 128 pixels, the data volume is modest: one frame is 2,048 bytes. That is small enough that I2C at 400 kHz can refresh the display in tens of milliseconds, and SPI can do it much faster. The datasheet’s AC characteristics give the SPI clock cycle and the I2C timing, and the command table shows the addressing modes.

A common integration error is to choose I2C because it saves pins, then discover that the UI needs animation or fast page changes. On a 1.5-inch OLED display, a partial update of a few text lines is fast even on I2C, but a full-screen animation at 100 Hz frame rate is not. The datasheet lists a frame frequency of 100 Hz, but that is the display’s internal refresh, not the host’s update rate. If the UI needs smooth scrolling or a moving waveform, SPI is the safer choice. If the UI is static text and icons, I2C is sufficient.

The interface mode is selected by the IM0, IM1, and IM2 pins. The datasheet’s pin table shows the strap settings for each mode. Verify the straps on the carrier board before assembly, and document them in the build file. A 1.5-inch OLED display with the wrong interface strap will not communicate, and the failure can look like a dead module.

Decision 3: Contrast setting is a lifetime decision, not a brightness preference

The datasheet specifies 100 cd/m² typical luminance at VDD = 3.0 V, VPP = 13.0 V, and contrast command 0x6F. The contrast control has 256 steps, and the operating life is specified as 20,000 hours at 100 cd/m² to 50% initial brightness. That lifetime is not a guarantee at every brightness setting. If the contrast is increased to make the display brighter in a sunlit enclosure, the lifetime will be shorter.

For a 1.5-inch OLED display in an industrial HMI, the contrast setting should be calibrated for the enclosure and the viewing distance, not set to the maximum in the initialization code. The datasheet’s design note warns against a white background with black characters because it increases power consumption and can cause crosstalk. A dark background with light text uses fewer lit pixels and reduces current. The power consumption of 120–150 mW at 30% pixels on is a reminder that the lit area matters.

A practical approach is to set the contrast for the intended indoor brightness, then add a temperature-compensation or ambient-light policy if the product will be used outdoors. The datasheet notes that brightness is lower at low temperature and higher at high temperature, but the display returns to normal at room temperature. That behavior is not a malfunction, but it can make a 1.5-inch OLED display look dim at startup in a cold environment. Test the final enclosure at −20°C and +70°C, and adjust the contrast policy if needed.

Decision 4: The mechanical stack must not press on the active area

The SFOS150JY-7205PAN is a COG module with a 1.45 mm thickness and a ZIF connection. The datasheet’s handling precautions are explicit: do not apply excessive force to the display surface, do not push hard on the display area, and do not hold the FPC by the connector. The mechanical drawing shows the FPC bend and the stiffener.

A common mechanical mistake with a 1.5-inch OLED display is to use the front bezel to press the display into the housing. The glass is thin, and pressure on the active area can cause pixel shorts. The datasheet warns that pushing the display area can cause a display defect. Use a gasket or a spacer that contacts the bezel or the FPC stiffener, not the active area. The FPC bend radius should be respected; if the display is mounted in a tight enclosure, a stiffener or a controlled bend is better than a sharp fold.

For a 1.5-inch OLED display with a touch panel option, the mechanical stack becomes more complex. Saef Technology Limited can provide standard and custom touch solutions, but the optical stack and the gasket should be defined before the bezel drawing is released. Adding touch after the front bezel is frozen is expensive at this size.

Decision 5: Sleep current and power sequencing are system properties

The datasheet’s power-up sequence is specific: VDD and AVDD or VPP first, then reset low for at least 10 µs, then reset high, then initialization commands, then display-on command, then a 100 ms wait before sending display data. The power-down sequence is the reverse: display-off command, then AVDD or VPP off, then a 100 ms wait, then VDD off. The datasheet notes that there will be no damage if the sequence is not met, but the display may not initialize correctly.

A 1.5-inch OLED display in an industrial product often shares a 3.3 V rail with the MCU and sensors. If the display’s VDD is on while the MCU is in deep sleep, the display’s sleep current (not specified in the excerpt, but typically microamps) can dominate the standby budget. Measure the system current with the display off and the MCU in its lowest power state. If the display’s internal DC-DC is enabled, the pump may draw current even when the display is off unless the pump is disabled by command.

The datasheet’s command table includes the DC-DC control command. Use it to disable the pump before power-down, and use the display-off command before removing power. A 1.5-inch OLED display that is powered down without the proper sequence may show a white flash on the next power-up or, in repeated cycles, develop image sticking.

A verification checklist for the 1.5-inch OLED display

Before the design review, confirm the following:

  • Power architecture (internal DC-DC or external VPP) is fixed and the BOM matches the selected mode.

  • Interface straps (IM0, IM1, IM2) match the selected mode and the host pin count.

  • Contrast setting is calibrated for the enclosure and the intended viewing distance, not set to maximum.

  • The bezel and gasket do not apply pressure to the active area; the FPC bend radius is respected.

  • Power-up and power-down sequences are captured at −20°C and +70°C.

  • Sleep current is measured with the display off and the MCU in its lowest power state.

  • The UI uses a dark background by default and avoids long static patterns.

  • Touch stack (if required) is defined before the front bezel is released.

A 1.5-inch OLED display is large enough to show a useful UI and small enough to fit a compact enclosure. The engineering effort belongs in the power architecture, the interface choice, the contrast policy, the mechanical stack, and the power sequence. The SFOS150JY-7205PAN provides the display and the controller flexibility; the reliability comes from the system design.

For a design review, contact the engineering team at Saef Technology Limited with the schematic, the power architecture, and the intended operating temperature range. The team can confirm the configuration and discuss the custom touch options if the enclosure allows.
